Maths
In Maths, we will be learning about the following:
- mass and capacity (litres and millilitres, capacity and volume)
- fractions (fractions of shapes, amounts, adding and subtracting fractions, counting up and down in fractions)
- money (pounds and pence, adding and subtracting amounts of money, finding the change)
- time (reading analogue and digital clocks, time problems)
- shape (2D and 3D shapes)
- statistics (graphs, bars and charts)
How can you help at home?
- Practise learning the times tables. The weekly times tables challenge will show which times table your child needs to learn before moving on to the next.
- Find opportunities to practise everyday maths in the real world such as counting coins to find the correct amount, working out the correct change, weighing ingredients using a scale in grams and kilograms and reading the time on a digital and analogue clock.
English
During the summer term, our writing will be linked to our Geography and DT topics, as well as linked to what we are reading in Guided Reading.
We will be reading The Great Kapok Tree, The Iron Man and Harley Hitch and the Fossil Mystery. We will be creating our own adventure and fantasy stories, writing some poetry linked to the rainforest and will be writing some set of instructions linked to our DT unit: constructing castles.
How can you help at home?
Please ensure your child reads at least 4 times a week. This is absolutely vital if the children are to shine to their best ability; it is the biggest factor in how well your child progresses in almost every area of the curriculum.
Children should bring in their reading records daily, signed by an adult when they have read.
Remember to colour in a star on your child's bookmark each time they read at home so that the children can receive their reading certificates and move on to the next bookmark.
Please encourage your child to write where possible at home to practise the skills they learn at school. Examples of writing could be: stories, lists, cards, book reviews, letters and recounts of what they have done at the weekend.
Science
In Science, we will be learning:
- plants (parts of a plant, plant growth, plant reproduction and pollination)
- forces (friction)
- magnets (magnetic and non-magnetic materials, north and south poles)
R.E.
The children will be learning how to answer the following questions:
- Does Jesus have authority for everyone?
- Can made-up stories tell the truth?
P.E.
PE will be taught on Mondays (by Mrs Billins) and Thursdays (by Mr Handy).
Children should come into school on these days wearing PE kit.
This term the children will be enjoying tennis, fitness, athletics and rounders.
Homework
Alternating Maths and English homework will be sent out every Thursday and should be handed in the following Monday. Completed homework will stay in school so that any errors and misconceptions can be addressed at school.
As well as this homework, please encourage your child to read at least 4 times a week and play Times Tables Rock Stars as much as possible.
Times Tables Challenge
The Times Tables Challenge involves a number of levels. Each level has 36 (or more) questions which should be completed within 3 minutes (this is the speed required by the statutory Year 4 times tables test).
The children can't miss a question out, and need to score 100% before moving on to the next level! The more practise the children have at home, the quicker they become at answering the questions and the faster they move up the levels!
The questions are in a random order, so please encourage your child to learn their tables in any order.
Playing Times Tables Rock Stars will support in learning their tables.
Below is the Times Tables Challenge Levels list and some further arithmetic practise.
