Year 2

Year 2 2023-2024

Our Year 2 Staff

Class Teachers:  Mrs Milanovic (Mon - Wed) and Mrs Baker (Thur - Fri)

Support Staff:    Mrs Eckersall and Mrs Nurton

Maths

This Spring term we will continue our focus on securing and extending their knowledge of place value, memorising number facts such as pairs to 10 and using that knowledge to work out pairs to 20 and 100, doubles, calculations, adding and subtracting. They will also be developing their mental maths and problem solving skills. Children will be working with money, understanding and completing multiplication and division questions, along with learning about length, height, mass, capacity and temperature. By the end of Year 2 the children will also know their 2, 5 and 10 times tables.

English

Throughout the year, the children will experience a wide range of texts and genres including poetry, instructions, recounts, reports and fiction, which they will use as models for their own personal writing as well as learning the conventions of grammar and punctuation in order to write well-structured pieces of work. The children will also have regular handwriting and spelling sessions each week.

Homework

Alternating Maths and English homework will be sent home every week on a Friday and then marked the following Thursday. Please remind your child to bring in their Homework book every Thursday so new English or Maths sheets can be stuck in!

In addition to this set homework, please continue to hear your child read as often as possible, ideally four times a week. If your child has a phonics shed book, please make this book is the priority and encourage your child to read it as  much as possible. The more they read it, the more familiar they will become with new words and the more fluent they will become.

There is also a list of high frequency and common exception words that children should know by the end of Year 2. This can be found below on the class page.

Class Routines

PE will take place on a Wednesday PM and Thursday PM. Children should come into school in their PE kit on these days. No earrings or watches are allowed. Children need to have a blue PE shirt, blue shorts and/or jogging bottoms, a blue jumper/hoodie, trainers and socks. Please ensure that all items of clothing are labelled.

For a more detailed overview, please see the curriculum overview at the bottom of this class page. Due to various reasons, the curriculum overview may change from time to time.
