Hello Year 2
Firstly we would like to wish you all a happy New Year. We hope you all had a lovely Christmas!
Please see below for information about what the children will be focusing on this term.
During our maths lessons, we will be looking at money, multiplication and division. Throughout all our maths topics we will develop the children's reasoning and problem solving skills.
During this Spring term we will be looking at a range of genres where the children will be able to demonstrate and develop their creative skills through writing, reading and performing. We will start the term learning how to write a non chronological report based on The Hodgeheg. The children will then be learning how to write an explanation text.
Through our writing, the children will be developing their knowledge of grammar and punctuation. We will consolidate basic punctuation and begin to use a wider range of punctuation to improve our writing. We will look at extending our sentences using a range of conjunctions and a more interesting and varied vocabulary to make their writing more interesting.
Over the next few weeks leading up to the end of term, we will alternate maths and literacy homework. Alongside the literacy homework, the children will also be given a set of spellings to learn. Your child could practise spelling the word and then put the word into a sentence to practise their handwriting and sentence structure. We have seen a huge improvement in the children's spelling ability and feel it is beneficial for them to keep learning their spellings as part of their homework.
Attached below, there is also a list of high frequency and common exception words that children should know by the end of Year 2.
Our history topic this term is about 'History makers' where children will be learning about how people have changed/ made history. They will be considering who is the greatest history maker based on their own enquiry skills.
The Geography topic this term is on 'why is our world wonderful'? The children will be Learning about the world’s wonders, the names and locations of the world’s oceans and considering what is unique about the local area.
PE will take place on a Wednesday PM and Thursday PM. Children should come into school in their PE kit on these days. No earrings or watches are allowed. Children need to have a blue PE shirt, blue shorts and/or jogging bottoms, a blue jumper/hoodie, trainers and socks. Please ensure that all items of clothing are labelled. This term the children will be learning dance and Badmington.
This terms science topic will be about growth and survival.
Should your child be self-isolating and well enough to attempt school-work, we will be issuing home-learning via Microsoft Teams. The children each have a unique log-in to access St Michael’s Year 2s Teams page and these log-in details will be sent home at the start of term. If you do not have your child’s log-in, please contact the office . All work will be uploaded to Microsoft Teams daily and will include a maths task, an English task, and weekly science, RE, PSHE, Creative Curriculum . A member of staff will respond to all queries via the Teams class chat page.
