Hello Year 2 and welcome back! smiley

We hope you have all had a lovely summer holidays and are ready for the term ahead.

We are all very excited to be starting back and we are looking forward to welcoming the children into Year 2.

Maths:

During our maths lessons, we will continue to build on what the children have learnt in Year 1.We will be starting the year learning about place value followed by addition and subtraction. Throughout all our maths topics we will develop the children's reasoning and problem solving skills.

English:

During the Autumn term we will be looking at a range of genres where the children will be able to demonstrate and develop their creative skills through writing, reading and performing. We will start the term learning how to write Traditional Tales. The children will then learn how to write letters and information texts that will link to our 'wow project'. Through our writing, the children will be developing their knowledge of grammar and punctuation. We will consolidate basic punctuation and begin to use a wider range of punctuation to improve our writing. We will look at extending our sentences using a range of conjunctions and a more interesting and varied vocabulary to make our writing more interesting.

Spellings

Although the children no longer take spellings home to learn for a weekly test, the children are still following a spelling scheme of work in class and are learning how to spell new words; the children are learning about spellings rules and patterns and how these help us to spell unknown words. A list of the first half term's spelling words that the children will be covering in class are attached at the bottom of this page. Any help you can give your child to learn these words at home will be a huge benefit to them in class; however there will no longer be a weekly test.

Attached below, there is also a list of high frequency and common exception words that children should know by the end of Year 2. If you have some time at home, please continue to practise these with your child; the more practise they get at spelling the words, the better they will become at using them correctly in their English lessons.

History and Geography:

Our history topic this term is about  'Amazing people' focusing on Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole. The topic will teach the children about the wonderful work of these 'Nurturing Nurses'. In the spring term we will explore the 'Fire of London' and in the summer term we will be studying the topic 'Beside the seaside' where the children will learn about the continents, seas, mountains and rivers.

PE:

PE will take place on a Wednesday PM and Thursday PM. Children should come into school in their PE kit on these days. No earrings or watches are allowed. Children need to have a blue PE shirt, blue shorts and/or jogging bottoms, a blue jumper/hoodie, trainers and socks. Please ensure that all items of clothing are labelled.

Homework:

Alternating Maths and English homework will be sent home every week on a Friday and then marked the following Thursday. Please remind your child to bring in their Homework book every Thursday so new English or Maths sheets can be stuck in! Late homework will not be marked.

In addition to this set homework, each week your child should read aloud most days and their reading record books signed.

Online Learning:

Should your child be self-isolating and well enough to attempt school-work, we will be issuing home-learning via Microsoft Teams. The children each have a unique log-in to access St Michael’s Year 2s Teams page and these log-in details will be sent home at the start of term. If you do not have your child’s log-in, please contact the office . All work will be uploaded to Microsoft Teams daily and will include a maths task, an English task, and weekly science, RE, PSHE, Creative Curriculum . A member of staff will respond to all queries via the Teams class chat page. For remote learning log-in guidance, please visit: Remote Learning - Microsoft Teams | St Michael's CofE Primary School (st-michaels-school.org)
