Year 2

Our Lovely Class

Welcome to Year 2

Class Teachers: Mrs Kate Lampitt

Support Staff: Mrs Squires, Mrs McComish

We are really looking forward to welcoming you all to Year 2.

Autumn 1

This term we will be looking at the following:

Our maths will continue to build on what the children learnt in Year 1.  This term we will be looking at place value, addition & subtraction, money and multiplication & division. Throughout all our maths topics we will develop the children's reasoning and problem solving, first as a whole class and later in the term independently.  We will also be revising our number bonds to 10 and 20 as well as number facts for all numbers to 20.

This term we will be looing at a range of genres where the children will be able to demonstrate and develop their creative skills through writing, reading and performing.  We will be looking at traditional tales, letters and postcards, stories with familiar settings and poetry.  Through all of the writing, the children will be developing their knowledge of grammar and punctuation. We will begin by revising basic punctuation and then looking at using commas, exclamations and question marks. We will look at extending our sentences using a range of conjunctions so that their writing is more interesting.

Our topic for this term is 'Amazing People and Marvellous Inventions'. This will take us into discovering some of the wonderful contraptions that have made life easier today.  We will learn about the people who invented these everyday items and when they were invented. The children will then have the opportunity to be inventors themselves, they will design and then build their invention and discuss this with their peers.

PE will take place on a Wednesday PM and Thursday PM. Children should come into school in their PE kit on these days. No earrings or watches are allowed. Children need to have a blue PE shirt, blue shorts and/or jogging bottoms, a warm jacket, trainers and socks.

Alternating Maths and English homework will be sent home every week on a Friday and then marked the following Thursday. Please remind your child to bring in their Homework book every Thursday so new English or Maths sheets can be stuck in!

In addition to this set homework, each week your child should read aloud most days and their reading record books signed.

For a more detailed overview, please see the curriculum overview at the bottom of this class page.
